    [[abstract]]In this paper, we study the traveling front solutions of the Lotka-Volterra competition-diffusion system with bistable nonlinearity. It is well-known that the wave speed of traveling front is unique. Although little is known for the sign of the wave speed. In this paper, we first study the standing wave which gives some criteria when the speed is zero.     11-Year Experience with Anatomical and Extra-anatomical Repair of Mycotic Aortic Aneurysms

    AbstractBackground. We have reviewed our management, of both ruptured and non-ruptured, abdominal and thoraco-abdominal mycotic aneurysms in order to determine the safety and efficacy of in situ and extra-anatomical prosthetic repairs.Methods. Data regarding presenting symptoms, investigations, operative techniques and outcome, were collected on patients treated at a singe centre over 11 years.Results. There were 11 men and four women, with a median age of 70 years (range, 24–79). All but one patient were symptomatic and six had a contained leak on admission. In six patients no organisms were identified in either blood or tissue cultures. Pre-operative CT identified; four infra-renal, four juxta-renal, three (Crawford thoraco-abdominal) type IV, three type III and one type II, aortic aneurysms. Thirteen were repaired with in situ prostheses and two required axillo-femoral prosthetic grafts. There were four early deaths. All surviving patients have been followed-up for a median duration of 38 months (range 1/2–112 months). There were two late deaths at 3 months (juxta-renal) and at 2 years (type III), the latter relating to graft infection.Conclusions. In the absence of uncontrolled sepsis, repair of mycotic aortic aneurysms using prosthetic grafts can achieve durable results

    Apoptosis induced by Staphylococcus aureus in human monocytic U937 cells involves Akt and mitogen-activated protein (MAPK) phosphorylation

    Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a leading etiologic agent of nosocomial and community-acquired infectious diseases. Numerous studies have shown that, S. aureus could promote apoptosis in host cells. Unfortunately, the cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon are still poorly understood. The present study aims to elucidate the signaling mechanisms involved in S. aureus-induced U937 cells apoptosis by investigating the role of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt (PI3K/Akt), mitogen-activated protein (MAPK) and caspases. Our results showed that, i decreased the expression of phosphorylation-Akt. In contrast, S. aureus increased phosphorylation-JNK1/2, phosphorylation-ERK1/2 and phosphorylation-p38 MAPK. Treatment of U937 cells with S. aureus resulted in the activation of caspase-3 and -9. Furthermore, caspases inhibitors, SP600125 (JNK inhibitor), SB203580 (p38MAPK inhibitor) and PD98059 (ERK inhibitor) decreased apoptosis in U937 cells. However, LY294002 (Akt inhibitor) increased U937 cells apoptosis. Taken together, our study for the first time suggest that S. aureus is able to enhance apoptosis of U937 cells through inhibition of PI3K/Akt and activation of MAPK signaling pathways.Key words: Staphylococcus aureus, mitogen-activated protein (MAPK), apoptosis, U937

    General Theory for the Ferroelectric Polarization Induced by Spin-Spiral Order

    The ferroelectric polarization of triangular-lattice antiferromagnets induced by helical spin-spiral order is not explained by any existing model of magnetic-order-driven ferroelectricity. We resolve this problem by developing a general theory for the ferroelectric polarization induced by spin-spiral order and then by evaluating the coefficients needed to specify the general theory on the basis of density functional calculations. Our theory correctly describes the ferroelectricity of triangular-lattice antiferromagnets driven by helical spin-spiral order, and incorporates known models of magnetic-order-driven ferroelectricity as special cases.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys.     The thermal equation of state of FeTiO_3 ilmenite based on in situ X-ray diffraction at high pressures and temperatures

    We present in situ measurements of the unit-cell volume of a natural terrestrial ilmenite (Jagersfontein mine, South Africa) and a synthetic reduced ilmenite (FeTiO_3) at simultaneous high pressure and high temperature up to 16 GPa and 1273 K. Unit-cell volumes were determined using energy-dispersive synchrotron X-ray diffraction in a multi-anvil press. Mössbauer analyses show that the synthetic sample contained insignificant amounts of Fe^(3+) both before and after the experiment. Results were fit to Birch-Murnaghan thermal equations of state, which reproduce the experimental data to within 0.5 and 0.7 GPa for the synthetic and natural samples, respectively. At ambient conditions, the unit-cell volume of the natural sample [V_0 = 314.75 ± 0.23 (1 ) Å^3] is significantly smaller than that of the synthetic sample [V_0 = 319.12 ± 0.26 Å^3]. The difference can be attributed to the presence of impurities and Fe^(3+) in the natural sample. The 1 bar isothermal bulk moduli K_(T0) for the reduced ilmenite is slightly larger than for the natural ilmenite (181 ± 7 and 165 ± 6 GPa, respectively), with pressure derivatives K_0' = 3 ± 1. Our results, combined with literature data, suggest that the unit-cell volume of reduced ilmenite is significantly larger than that of oxidized ilmenite, whereas their thermoelastic parameters are similar. Our data provide more appropriate input parameters for thermo-chemical models of lunar interior evolution, in which reduced ilmenite plays a critical role

    Full particle simulation of a perpendicular collisionless shock: A shock-rest-frame model

    The full kinetic dynamics of a perpendicular collisionless shock is studied by means of a one-dimensional electromagnetic full particle simulation. The present simulation domain is taken in the shock rest frame in contrast to the previous full particle simulations of shocks.     Microlensing optical depth towards the Galactic bulge from MOA observations during 2000 with Difference Image Analysis

    We analyze the data of the gravitational microlensing survey carried out by by the MOA group during 2000 towards the Galactic Bulge (GB). Our observations are designed to detect efficiently high magnification events with faint source stars and short timescale events, by increasing the the sampling rate up to 6 times per night and using Difference Image Analysis (DIA). We detect 28 microlensing candidates in 12 GB fields corresponding to 16 deg^2. We use Monte Carlo simulations to estimate our microlensing event detection efficiency, where we construct the I-band extinction map of our GB fields in order to find dereddened magnitudes. We find a systematic bias and large uncertainty in the measured value of the timescale tEoutt_{\rm Eout} in our simulations. They are associated with blending and unresolved sources, and are allowed for in our measurements. We compute an optical depth tau = 2.59_{-0.64}^{+0.84} \times 10^{-6} towards the GB for events with timescales 0.3<t_E<200 days. We consider disk-disk lensing, and obtain an optical depth tau_{bulge} = 3.36_{-0.81}^{+1.11} \times 10^{-6}[0.77/(1-f_{disk})] for the bulge component assuming a 23% stellar contribution from disk stars. These observed optical depths are consistent with previous measurements by the MACHO and OGLE groups, and still higher than those predicted by existing Galactic models. We present the timescale distribution of the observed events, and find there are no significant short events of a few days, in spite of our high detection efficiency for short timescale events down to t_E = 0.3 days. We find that half of all our detected events have high magnification (>10). These events are useful for studies of extra-solar planets.Comment: 65 pages and 30 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ.
